Shoulder or Arm Pain

Physical Therapy For Shoulder & Arm Pain In Battle Creek, MI

How long have you been living with shoulder or arm pain? If it's been more than a few weeks, it may be time to consider physical therapy. Physical therapists Mohinder Chawdry and Kristy Penick of Total Health Center in Battle Creek and Lake Odessa, MI, discuss common conditions that can cause shoulder and arm pain and explain how physical therapy can relieve your pain.

Why do I have shoulder or arm pain?

Shoulder or arm pain can occur due to a variety of conditions, including:

  • Bursitis: Bursitis occurs when a fluid-filled sac called a bursa becomes inflamed. The bursa in your shoulder helps tendons in your rotator cuff muscles slide over your shoulder joint easily. When the bursa becomes inflamed, pain may spread down your arm, and your range of motion may be limited.
  • Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons that attach your muscles to your bones can also cause lingering shoulder and arm pain.
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries: Inflammation or tears in the muscles or tendons of the rotator cuff in your shoulder causes pain when you move your shoulder or arm. Other symptoms include weakness, pain when lying on your side and crackling sounds when you move your arm.
  • Trauma: Both major injuries and constant wear and tear can damage your muscles, tendons and bursae.
  • Dislocations: When your humerus moves out of the shoulder joint, pain and decreased range of motion can be a problem even after the bone is moved back into place.
  • Osteoarthritis: Deterioration of the cartilage in your shoulder joint due to arthritis tends to cause pain and difficulty moving your arm.

How can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy can help you stabilize your shoulder joint, strengthen the muscles in your rotator cuff and arm, improve your range of motion and decrease pain. The first phase of physical therapy often involves stretching the muscles in the joint and using heat, ice packs, massage and electrical stimulation to decrease your pain. You'll be taught special exercises that will help strengthen your arm and improve your range of motion. Whether you visit the Battle Creek or Lake Odessa office, your sessions may involve exercises with resistance bands, weight training and other therapies that will help you use your shoulder and arm without pain.

Physical therapy for shoulder and arm pain offers an excellent way to treat your symptoms naturally.
